The purpose of this research is to discover the impact on gait, if any, of using a smart phone while walking. Both visual tasks that require cognitive abilities and audiovisual tasks were tested. The test subjects of the visual task group (n=15) and the audiovisual task group (n=15) were randomly assigned for this experiment. The results of the study showed a slight decrease in the measurement of gait in the visual task group. While the audiovisual task group had a slight increase in left and right step length. Statistically, there was not much difference in the length of a single stride and the length of time the stride took. Additionally, if you look at the results of the gait measurement when comparing between the two groups, there were slight differences in the aspect of a left step length, a right step length and a stride length. However, it was hard to clarify the distinction in the length of time the stride took. In summary, with this study we could see that some elements of walking changed while the test subjects were using smart phones. Furthermore, visual tasks that require cognitive abilities showed a greater decrease in walking performance than audiovisual tasks.
